Award-winning children's author, Donna McDine Visits the Virtual Collingswood Book Festival

I am thrilled to be part of the 18th Annual Collingswood Book Festival that has gone virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Collingswood Book Festival is a 501 (c) 3 organization run entirely by volunteers. Every October since 2004, the event has been held outdoors as a street festival. Once the pandemic has subsided, organizers expect to return to the street, where the Book Festival covers block after block of Haddon Avenue.

Each year, community members from the region are invited to help organize the event. Collingswood Book Festival Unveils Children’s Programming The Children’s section of the Collingswood Book Festival this year is as much for parents and teachers as it is for their children. Parents and their children can listen to the nearly 30 authors read from their books, and with a simple click, you can buy an autographed book from Inkwood Books. Learn more

Welcome to the Children’s Book section!

We hope you have a fun and interactive experience with our authors. Each author provided their background, ways to connect on social media and a virtual reading of their featured book.

A great big shout out to Amanda Rowe. We recently connected through the Internet and my blog interview of Amanda appeared on September 9, 2020. Learn more about Amanda

Marketing & Inspiration: The Story Behind A Sandy Grave

Where does your writing inspiration come from?

The inspiration for A Sandy Grave...

A Sandy Grave came to life from a newspaper article I read about a dead whale that washed up on shore of a California beach. What fascinated me about this article was the police needed to guard the whale, until the local marine biology institute could arrive to determine what the whale died from. The reasoning for guarding the whale astounded me. Apparently, poachers would take the opportunity to steal the whale’s teeth to sell to artists to create scrimshaw on the teeth and then sell for a profit.

I'd enjoy hearing where your writing inspiration comes from.

Where My Writing Muse Takes Me - Behind the Scenes of Creating A Sandy Grave by Donna McDine

Welcome to today's Where My Writing Muse Takes Me. One can never talk about the warmer weather approaching, so today I'm focusing on my award-winning children's early reader picture book, A Sandy Grave

Beyond the enjoyment of a beach vacation I never gave much thought to marine life. Sure we’ve gone on the typical whale or dolphin watching tours and were always delighted to see these creatures come up out of the ocean. But I never truly paid attention to what some humans do to marine life, until the day I read a news article about a dead whale that washed up on shore of a California beach. What fascinated me about this article was the police needed to guard the whale, until the local marine biology institute could arrive to determine what the whale died from. The reasoning for guarding astounded me. Apparently, poachers would take the opportunity to steal the whale’s teeth to sell for artists to create scrimshaw on the teeth and then sell for a profit.

This particular article pumped up my creative writing juices and before I knew it, I was researching marine biology, Endangered Species Act, and the Mammal Protection Act. Then came the creation of the fictional storyline and characters. Once I knew how I wanted the characters to be instrumental in propelling the story along with my research, the two blended into a beach adventure with a learning aspect without preaching to the reader. Hence, A Sandy Grave was born. The title was created from points in the article and research.

Where does your writing muse take you? I'd enjoy hearing about your experiences.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Where My Writing Muse Takes Me with Award-winning Children's Author - Powder Monkey

Wow! It's the last Friday of February. How can that be? Feels like we just wrapped up the holidays.

Welcome to today's edition of Where My Writing Muse Takes Me. Today' I'm taking you to a behind the scenes glimpse as to where my inspiration and muse came for my early reader picture book, Powder Monkey

Powder Monkey was an initial manuscript I wrote and submitted to a different publisher that put out a request for manuscripts for the late 1700's to 1800's time period, specifically dealing with the Royal Navy. Being a lover of everything historical fiction I jumped at the opportunity. They turned it down, but after several rounds of edits with Guardian Angel Publishing, PowderMonkey was awarded an acceptance.

The Royal Navy Press Gangs is incredibly fascinating to me, especially since the Press Gangs would kidnap boys as young as 12 years of age and force them to work on the ships. Appalling, but incredible for a writer to uncover. The story idea flowed as well as the characters making for a journey like non-other.

Often times I find knowing when to stop the research the most difficult. I never "throw out" my research, even if it all does not make it into the current work-in-progress...one never knows when it will come in handy for a new manuscript. Here's to the next bit of research taking a life of it's own on!

I’d enjoy hearing about your research process.

Thank you for your time and interest.
