Virtual Author Visits

Welcome back to Marketing Mondays at Write What Inspires You! Today, I'm chatting about virtual author visits.

Are you an author that is homebound during these chaotic times and is looking for ways to connect with students? Look no further!

Redesign your in-person visit to an online presentation and offer to connect with students via Zoom or Skype.

Virtual Author Visit:

Create your announcement and post it to your blog, website and social media presence offering 15-20 minute (or longer if you wish) sessions for those interested in having their children connect with an author.

Media Release Online Services:

Take the time out to write and post a media release announcing your virtual author visit to online media release sites such as:

· EzineArticles.com

· PressReleasePoint.com

· MarketPressRelease.com

Each service has their own submission guidelines, so be sure to read through before posting your media release.

Free Skype Meet the Author Session with Award-winning children's author, Donna McDine

Are you a family that is homebound with your school age children? Are you looking ways to entertain and keep them busy beyond the usual indoor activities and school assignments? Look no further!

As an award-winning children’s author of six children's books I am offering FREE Skype Meet the Author sessions for families that may be interested in having their children connect with a children’s author. Now through March 31, 2020.

Our session would be approximately 20 minutes with an opportunity for your children to ask questions. Not only can these sessions be conducted for individual families, we can gather your children’s classmates virtually as well through one session.

How to Avoid the Feeling of Isolation by Conducting Author Visits

Your writing career is moving at a steady pace, but from time-to-time, the feeling of isolation overwhelms you. What is a writer to do to get one’s self out into the world of the living, but not neglect your writing goals? One of the best ways to get yourself known locally as a serious writer would be to participate in author visits to elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in your area - depending on what genre you write for. Also check out your local library and bookstores – they too may be interested in having you conduct an event. Presenting your short story or non-fiction article for children’s magazines can be fun way to present the creative writing process to children of all ages without overwhelming them. And since you are writing for children, why not spend time with them?

It can be daunting to research school visits, considering the Internet comes up with over 2 million hits when typing in “School Author Visits.” Why not check out the following resources:

Local Schools: Contact an elementary school in your area and find out whom you need to present your school visit request to. The school secretaries are happy to point you in the right direction, whether it is the principal, PTA or program coordinator of the school. IMPORTANT: Keep in mind you don’t necessarily need to have a published book to conduct a school visit. You may be able to present a published short story or non-fiction article to the class. In addition, let the school know that you can meet with respective teachers and conform the event to coincide with their ELA State Assessment Guidelines.

Your network of fellow writers: We are all cheering for one another and I’m sure your network would be happy to discuss their ideas of school visits. If you are just starting out, the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators – http://www.scbwi.org, has a wealth of information on all topics for writing for children.

Local Librarian: I have had wonderful success in becoming “buddies” with my local librarian. They are a chock full of information when it comes to conducting events for children. You never know, they may be so impressed with your initiative that they may request that you conduct a visit at their library. What better way to keep children inspired to read by meeting a local writer living in their midst?

Local Bookstores: Approach the manager or owner to see if they would be interested in having you conduct an author visit. If they are, obtain their guidelines for conducting such a visit and tell them that you will get back to them with your proposal / school visit kit. Be sure to leave your business card with them.

Children's Author Virtual Visit via Nepris - Donna McDine

By invitation through nepris, teacher Ms. Jami Gallo of the Francis H. Sheckler Elementary School in Catasauqua, PA reached out to me to conduct an author virtual visit for their 2nd grade classes.

What a wonderful way to spend my lunch time on December 10, 2019 when I video chatted with Ms. Gallo's class and had the opportunity to share my author presentation, How a Book Comes to Be.

The students were a true delight and after the presentation we had time to chat about Writing Children's Books. We focused on how they are studying various forms of writing and the stages of the writing process. The second graders asked insightful questions that kept the ease of conversation flowing.

They also shared with me that they read my children's book, Hockey Agony together as a class! Woo hoo...I'm thrilled!

I am filled with deep gratitude and joy for being selected to virtual visit with the students and teachers at the Francis H. Sheckler Elementary School. Thank you Ms. Gallo and nepris for arranging such an exhilarating time.
