Write What Inspires You Hosts Guest Blogger, A.R. Silverberry

I'm pleased to host guest blogger, A.R. Silverberry
with his following contribution...

Ode to a Muse
by A.R. Silverberry

Have you ever walked down a shaded street and caught a whiff of fragrance? You look around, wondering what blossom produced such a scent. There doesn’t seem to be anything around, but then you spy a bush with unassuming blossoms. You lean over to sniff, and all of spring seems to be concentrated there in one intoxicating aroma. That’s the muse. Hidden in the most unlikely places.

She glides into your dreams. She whispers in your ear. Listen! Can you hear her twittering in the foliage of that maple?

She strikes you with a sudden burst of light—a picture—a word—a fragment of a sentence. A feeling. You know it means something. Sometimes she bestows a gift and you see the complete idea, fully realized, the way a chip from a hologram reveals the whole. Most times, you know this little sprout you hold in your hand is important, but you don’t why. Just that you’re about to embark on a quest, final destination unknown.

But she’s fickle. If you don’t catch her prompt quickly, it evaporates like dew on a summer morning. How strange for a daughter Memory to tease you so.

She’s jealous. She wants you all to herself. Don’t you dare take up anything else while she holds you in her sway, lest she snatches away the river of ideas she’s pouring into you.

She sings to you; she dances like a butterfly across a meadow; she plucks the string of a harp you didn’t know lay hidden in your heart. She fills you with ecstasy. You burst with it like a fever, and she sweeps you away. You follow because you have no choice. You caught the whiff of fragrance. You’re hooked.

Time vanishes. Hunger vanishes. You’re a racing stallion; she’s the charioteer. Off you dash.

Where does she take you? Anywhere and everywhere. You trust her lead, and hidden among the old clothes, the dusty boxes, or buried in a closet, you discover a diamond.
