Happy Thanksgiving from Write What Inspires You

This Thanksgiving, let those of us who have much and those who have little gather at the welcoming table of the Lord. At this blessed feast, may rich and poor alike remember that we are called to serve on another and to walk together in God's gracious world. With thankful hearts, we praise our God who like a loving parent denies us no good thing.

I am pleased to present...

Super Spoons to the Rescue
by Carolyn Wilhelm

Synopsis:
This is a math story about the spoon superheroes who help people measure ingredients for things like chocolate cakes. When their town is hit by a tornado, they help dispense the exact amount of medicines needed. They fly to the rescue as requested. This book also has math worksheets and activity cards for math class.

Pre-reading question to ask children: which is more, ½ teaspoon or ¼ teaspoon? Many children think ¼ is correct because they know 4 is larger than 2.

When Carolyn's father was young, he once traded a bowl of ice cream for a cup of ice cream. He worried it wasn't a good trade, and he later remembered the story and told his children. Carolyn decided that even young children can learn about measuring and avoid bad trades like that one! When teaching first grade, many children began the fraction unit by thinking 1/100 was a huge number. She wrote this story to help parents provide some fraction readiness at home.

Learn more about Carolyn Wilhelm at her website.

Write What Inspires You Feature of the Week: Children's Author, Maggie Grinnell

Welcome to this week's edition of Feature of the Week.

Today, I'm pleased to host children's author,
Maggie Grinnell as she presents her article...

WRITING WITHIN
By
Maggie Grinnell

Even though I had a wild imagination growing up, I didn’t dream of becoming a writer. I wanted to help animals so I thought I would be a vet. But that dream faded when I found out part of the job would have me deciding to put sick animals out of their misery.
When high school came around, I wanted to do something with my imagination and my detective brain of wanting to know who, what, why, where and how. So I studied journalism. I was too shy to speak in front of a camera or in front of people. So my 2nd option was to be a teacher but my shyness also stopped that from happening.
In college, I majored in English. Then is when I wrote my 1st short story and really loved the written word and wanted to write more.
I loved suspense and read every book by Dean Koontz and Mary Higgins Clark I could. I also loved the detective side of suspense, of finding clues. So I read Nancy Drew mysteries.
My 1st short story that I wrote, I didn’t think it was that good so I tossed it away somewhere. 10 years later, that story never left me. So I rewrote it and it became published.
I continued writing suspense stories but I wasn’t satisfied. I heard of writers having a “writer’s voice.” I wanted to find my “voice”.
One day, I heard something inside me say “what do you feel inside when you write?” I thought I feel happy, fulfilled and like a little kid. So I went into my imagination and started writing children stories. I finally felt connected to my writing and was proud of the words I wrote. I have found ‘my voice.’

Maggie's books:

About Maggie: I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer when I was young. When I finally fell in love with the written word, I had already written my first book. I have since written three children’s picture books and two small books of poetry.

To learn more about Maggie and her work, visit her at www.maggiegrinnell.com

Maggie thanks for guest blogging today! I too enjoyed the Nancy Drew mysteries and still have my set of books.

Continue to be safe and well!

Feature of the Week at Write What Inspires You -

Welcome back to this week's Feature of the Week...

Going back to one of my first purchases of a writer's help book when I embarked on my writing career in 2007...wow has it been 13 years...phew! Where does the time go?! I'm pleased to present...

Writer's First Aid ~
Getting Organized, Getting Inspired, and Sticking to It

by Kristi Holl

Divided into four sections...

I. Getting Started
II. Work Habits That Work For You
III. Money and Other Practical Matters
IV. Create the Writing Life You love

Writer's First Aid is a go to guide of guidance in every stage of your writing career.

When I first purchased Writer's First Aid I read it in its entirety with the excitement of unwrapping a gift. I was immediately drawn into the writing world of Kristi Holl through her expert knack of making you feel as if she is speaking to you directly. My book is earmarked and highlighted to the hilt and I refer back to it often when in the need of steadfast and clear advice.

Check out Writer's First Aid and if you are so inclined treat yourself to this never ending resource.

Kristi Holl's first middle-grade novel was published by Atheneum (1983). To date, Kristi has sold 42 books: 40 middle-grade books (30 fiction and 10 nonfiction) and Writer's First Aid and More Writer's First Aid, adult books to help writers survive the writing life. (Eleven of her books are mysteries; her Haunting of Cabin 13 won the Maryland Children's Book Award).

Learn more about Kristi and her writing world at her website.

What books do you suggest to expand one's writing tool box? I'd enjoy hearing about your recommendations. I look forward to our conversation.

Thank you for joining me today.

Feature of the Week - Write What Inspires You Interviews Children's Author, Karin Larson

Welcome back to Feature of the Week Wednesdays! Today, I'm delighted to profile my fellow critique partner and children's author, Karin Larson.

Karin, we first met through our Crittin’ Chicks critique group via cyberspace almost ten years ago and I’m delighted to say that we have stay connected through our critique group, personally and publishing journeys. We reside in different parts of the United States, but through technology the connection is authentic, one that I cherish. It’s on my bucket list to meet in person.

Donna, Oh my, has it really been 10 years?? Time flies. I would love nothing more than to meet in person as well, and I cherish our friendship and connection so very much, both personally and professionally.

Now to catch up, I’m curious as I am sure our visitors are:

DMc: Do you hold a day job while continuing to follow your writing muse? If yes, what is your career beyond authorship?

Karin: I do work part time. I am a Speech/Language Pathologist in a private elementary school and work Tuesday through Thursday.

DMc: How many books do you have published? Please share the titles, genre, publisher and synopsis of each.

Karin: I currently have two published picture books for children. BEDTIME KISSES (4RV Publishing, April 2014) is a sweet bedtime counting book for little ones. LITTLE BUG (Guardian Angel Publishing, August 2015) is a story of persistence paying in the long run and also teaches about concepts and prepositions. My third picture book, ALPHABET ZOO, is under contract with 4RV Publishing and is tentatively scheduled for a Spring 2021 release. It is an alphabet book exploring A to Z animals from land, air and sea.

See my review of Bedtime Kisses

DMc: What is your process in creating your characters? Do you create a profile outline or other technique?

Karin: I do not have a process per se nor do I typically create an outline. My characters seem to typically just come to me and start to develop as I ruminate on the story. I do try to later create character sketches to get to know my characters more deeply, but that usually comes after I have a pretty good vision already.

DMc: What is your process in creating your storylines? Do you create an outline, free write or other technique?

Karin: I typically free write. I don’t seem to work well with outlines. Having said that, I do most often write short picture books. I believe I would need to cultivate the ability to better outline if writing longer works.

DMc: Do you attend writer’s workshops and conferences? If yes, what do you feel is the most important aspect of attending?

Karin: I do try to attend at least one conference in person a year as well as online workshops/webinars when possible. Various SCBWI chapters offer great webinars for reasonable prices. I’ve found 12 x 12 and Picture Book Summit both to be very valuable as well. There is always a great deal of good information at conferences in terms of the writing process, market info, etc.; however, the most important aspect has been the contacts made and relationships formed with fellow writers and presenters.

DMc: Please share with our readers your current work-in-progress, your marketing strategy and how to reach you.

Karin: I am currently finalizing edits on two picture books to get them out on submission and have a couple others I am at the point of needing to decide to further edit or scrap them altogether for now. There are a few new ideas calling after StoryStorm this past January as wellJ My marketing strategy needs work! I try to be present/active on various social media outlets and post on my blog, but there is only so much time in the day. Marketing often takes a back seat. One must make time to write in order to have something to market. It is a never ending balance. Readers can find me at the following:

Karin, it’s been an honor to interview and profile you at Write What Inspires You! Wishing you all the very best personally and professionally.

Donna, thank you for featuring me at Write What Inspires You!. Much appreciated! Wishing you all the best as well.

Feature of the Week at Write What Inspires You - Bedtime Kisses Book Review

The Feature of the Week at Write What Inspires You!

My book review of Karin Larson's children's picture book....

Karin Larson’s children’s picture book, Bedtime Kisses, is sure to delight your young muses from the onset. The whimsical connection many toddlers have with their stuffed animals is endearing to not only themselves, but to the adults in their lives. The simplicity of loving their stuffed animals as if they are real pulls at the heartstrings. Come along for a unique bedtime counting ritual that will soon become a classic routine in your home.

The illustrations by Ginger Nielson provided a rich backdrop to Larson’s clever counting story.
