Synopsis of children's books:

The Golden Pathway: Be transported through time to the Underground Railroad, where high-pitched screams echo each night. David’s cruel Pa always chooses the same victim. Despite the circumstances during slavery, David uncovers the courage to defy his Pa. Raised in a hostile environment where abuse occurs daily, David attempts to break the mold and befriends the slave, Jenkins, owned by his Pa. Fighting against extraordinary times and beliefs, David attempts to lead Jenkins to freedom with no regard for his own safety and possible consequences dealt out by his Pa. Ages: 8-12 years old

Powder Monkey: Forced into a life at sea by the Royal Navy Press Gangs, 12-year-old Tommy Kitt finds himself in a floating sea of misery. Poor living conditions and beatings occur daily. Despite his small size, Tommy must summon the courage and physical ability to prevail in a situation he cannot escape. Ages: 8-12 years old

A Sandy Grave: The anticipation of summer vacation can put anyone in a great mood with the excitement of adventures to be had--especially at the beach. But what is a group of friends to do when they discover mysterious men poaching whale teeth at the beach? Ages: 8-12 years old

Hockey Agony: Peer Pressure and Honesty many times go hand-in-hand.  What is Larry to do when his teammate asks him to cheat when he is given the responsibility to run the clock during the big hockey game?  Outwardly, it may seem he will follow suit, but his conscious tells him otherwise at the moment of truth. Ages: 8-12 years old

Dee and Deb Off They Go Kindergarten First Day Jitters: The anxiety of finding one’s own place and friends in kindergarten without the comfort of having her fraternal twin sister nearby at first overwhelms Dee until she realizes even without her fraternal twin sister, Dee and her classmates for the most part are in the same boat. Ages: 3-8 years old

Thank you for your interest.

Happy Holidays!

Prodding #Inspiration Along by Cheryl Malandrinos

Welcome! I'm delighted to host fellow children's author, Cheryl Malandrinos. I always enjoy hearing how fellow authors find their inspiration. Today, Cheryl is doing just that has she tours cyberspace along with her latest children's book, Amos Faces His Bully.

Welcome Cheryl!

Prodding Inspiration Along
It’s hard to talk about writing without bringing up inspiration. Almost every interviewer asks where the idea for your latest book came from. There are articles to inspire your writing; books are written to provide inspiration and encouragement; and you’ll often find conferences that hold panels dedicated to inspiring your writing.

Some writers only put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) when inspired to do so, while others discipline themselves to write even when inspiration is elusive. William Faulkner once said, “I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately I am inspired at 9 o'clock every morning.” I guess we know where he stands on this topic.

My personal relationship with inspiration is one where I prod it along in the hopes of producing results.

My first book, Little Shepherd, was inspired by a Christmas carol. At bedtime, I would sing The Little Drummer Boy to my daughter as a lullaby. Each time I sang it, the image of a shepherd boy meeting the Holy Family on the night of the first Christmas would come to me. It took two years, but eventually I was able to plot out Obed’s story…though the end result was very different than I originally intended.

A Christmas Kindness was inspired by a desire to focus my children’s attention on others during the holiday season. Because the story takes place in the mall around Christmas, I spent a few hours at the mall sitting in the food court watching the kids line up to meet Santa. Sounds really tough, doesn’t it?

Macaroni and Cheese for Thanksgiving and my latest picture book, Amos Faces His Bully, were completed thanks to the Picture Book Idea Month/STORYSTORM challenge I participate in each year. Originally only for picture book authors, this event challenges writers to come up with 30 story ideas over 30 days. I also have a recently written picture book that is ready to submit thanks to Picture Book Idea Month in 2012 (sometimes my inspiration needs a lot of prodding).

Now that I’ve talked about my inspiration, I hope you’ll share yours. Do you have any tips or tricks to share? I’m always open to suggestions. Writers can never have too much inspiration.

Book Excerpt:
Amos clutched his knees to his chest. Sitting in the dirt, he blinked to keep the tears from spilling down his cheeks.

Nathaniel and the other neighborhood boys marched around, taunting him.

“Are you going to cry now, baby?” Nathaniel balled his hands into fists and pretended to rub his eyes.

“I’m not crying,” ten-year-old Amos said with a sniffle. He stood and brushed the dirt off his clothes.

“I bet you’re the biggest cry baby in all of Bethlehem,” said Nathaniel.

The boys pushed him back and forth chanting, “Cry baby, cry baby.”

Guest Author and Illustrator, Kathleen Bullock Visits Write What Inspires You

I am delighted to host author/illustrator Kathleen Bullock. It's not too often that an author is also an illustrator. Come along for a glimpse into Kathleen's creative world. Take it away Kathleen...

In earlier days I worked my art in oils and watercolor, pencil and pastels, even the occasional collage. I’ve always been an illustrator at heart, rather than a classic ‘artist’. With a new world of electronics on the horizon, I saw that I’d have to adapt to creating artwork for publication in an electronic format, and I have. It’s a challenge to minimize the digital look of electronic art and give each piece the casual look of ‘top-of-your-head’ sketchiness that I so love, but I’m starting to get there.

I used Photoshop to create the artwork for Olive and the Great Flood. This meant that I could control the color and images on each page for consistency. Each separate piece of art is on its own invisible layer. I can eliminate or correct any of these images before I fix the art on a single layer. The pages then are sent to the publisher as individual jpegs for publication.

You can see my evolving styles on my portfolio web site, www.kathleenbullock.carbonmade.com

Also, look for my next book soon to be published by Guardian Angel,

I hope readers will enjoy reading Olive and the Great Flood as much as I did illustrating it.
