Children's Author, Editor and Founder and Owner - Stories for Children Magazine - VS Grenier

Interviewing VS Grenier is a true full circle experience for me. My first publishing credit was with Stories for Children Magazine in 2007 and I haven’t looked back since. Grenier is the owner and founder of Stories for Children Magazine and is a freelance children’s author and editor at Halo Publishing. Grenier’s dynamic and forward thinking entrepreneur writing skills keeps her at the forefront in the children’s publishing industry. She wears many hats and wears them all well. Join me on this fascinating interview about her current writing career moves.

DMc: After taking a hiatus from writing to have your third child you are now back into the writing groove. What has been your biggest challenge in balancing a newborn, a soon to be kindergartener, and teenager?

VS: Actually, only Stories for Children Magazine is on a hiatus. I have been busy with my personal writing in-between taking care of Sabrina, my new baby girl. The one thing I have been finding hard to do … is not adding to my writing responsibilities. The other two kids are great and give me my writing time, which is mostly when the baby is sleeping. My fourteen and five year old have been use to mommy writing for the past few years. Now to teach the baby about mommy’s writing time. Of course, I do not think the baby cares much about my personal time. LOL. At least she sleeps through the night now.

DMc: Your first picture book, Babysitting SugarPaw, was published through Halo Publishing in 2009, what has been your best marketing tool to date?

VS: Well, my marketing strategy went out the window a few months after my book hit the printing press. I am sorry to say, I did not do as much marketing as I would have liked when the book first came out. The reason being, I found out I was pregnant and I came down with the swine flu. However, I did find doing a coloring contest of the main characters really helped sell some books and spread the word about Babysitting SugarPaw. In addition, I did a lot of blog interviews like this one and did a drawing at each one to help spread the word. I had some really great sales during those months.

DMc: Virginia, you are the founder of Stories for Children Magazine. Can you please share with our readers your future plans for magazine?

VS: Right now Stories for Children Magazine is on hiatus because I just do not have the time to put each issue together. Even though the magazine is an ezine, it takes up about 60 hours a week of my time to run it, not counting the time SFC team members put in to do their duties as well. My plan is to reopen in late 2011 or the beginning of 2012. Right now, I’m currently looking at better ways to run the magazine and making some changes such as publishing 9 issues a year instead of 12 issues, like we use to do. Another thing I am looking to do is make the magazine a paying market. I’m not sure how possible this will be because of the economy. Nevertheless, it is still something I would like to do one day soon.

DMc: You also recently created a new blog http://www.thewritingmama.blogspot.com and have already developed a great following. What do you hope to achieve through your blog?

VS: I really do not have a goal for The Writing Mama. I just thought it would be fun to have a personal blog where I posted about my adventures raising a family while writing and being published. At first, I was only going to post when I had something to share, but now I do have a schedule for the posts. Mondays I talk about my weight lose goals, share some tips on staying healthy (since a lot of writers spend so much time sitting), and share a writing prompt to get the creative juices flowing for the week. Tuesdays and Thursdays, I share my thoughts or a writing tip. Sometimes both. Wednesdays I post an article from a fellow writer. The topics can be on anything to do with writing. Then there are the Friday posts. Those are my favorite because I get to chat with fellow writers about balancing their writing life with their family life. I find each interview very inspiring and motivating.

Who knows, maybe some type of book will come out of it.

DMc: You are also an editor with Halo Publishing. Please share with our readers what this entails.

VS: I do a few different things as an editor for Halo. One of the things I do is review manuscripts submitted for publication. Halo likes to have a board of editors read each manuscript and comment on it. Not a full critique, but an overview on if the manuscript is right for the company and if any editing or a professional Read & React is needed.

Another thing I do is the Read & Reacts. This is a one to one and half page professional critique. What I do is point out specific areas needing some work such as point of view changes, telling vs. showing, or weedy word usage. This is a great way for authors to improve their writing and manuscript for publication. However, this does not replace a good line-by-line professional critique. Which I do on the side through my website http://vsgrenier.com/.

Lastly, my other responsibility at Halo is copyeditor where I go through a manuscript before it is sent to pagination. I look for all kinds of things from extra spacing to grammar errors.

DMc: What can we expect from you in the future?

VS: I really don’t know. I am always coming up with new ideas and adventures in the world of ink. What I can tell you is what I have on my plate currently as projects. Besides working on Stories for Children Publishing stuff, I plan to continue my daily blog posts at The Writing Mama. I’m currently the assistant on the Blog Talk Radio show A Good Story is a Good Story every Monday night at 8pm Central.

On the writing front, I am working on two picture books, three YA novels, and some additional book concepts for Babysitting SugarPaw.

Donna, I want to think for having me on your blog today. It is always a pleasure to chat with you.

Bonnie Whiskers happily arrives at her first babysitting job and becomes quite nervous upon hearing SugarPaw’s protests. In her best attempt not to be thwarted by SugarPaw’s negativity of being babysat, Bonnie Whiskers listens intently as Mama Bear explains the rules chart. Relieved her task at hand appears simpler than she thought Bonnie Whiskers relaxes and attempts to engage SugarPaw. SFC: Families Matter Blog – It’s Finally Here – Popcorn Poetry Contest

KERNEL SEASON’S POPCORN

What was discovered in a bat cave in New Mexico that dates back 5,500 years? What do Americans consume 17 billion quarts each year of? What food is so versatile it can be used in pudding, candy, soup, salad, and as an entrée?

The answer to all these questions is the same: popcorn!

With everyone health- and diet-conscious these days, popcorn is one of the few indulgences left that actually tastes good and is good for you. Popcorn is a whole grain that’s high in fibre and low in fat. And since it’s only 24 calories per cup, you can have five cups of air-popped popcorn for under 130 calories.

I know what you’re thinking: unless you add butter, popcorn tends to be a bit bland. Not anymore. With Kernel Season’s you can jazz up that ordinary popcorn into a tantalizing, tasty treat. Made from all natural ingredients and real cheese, Kernel Season’s popcorn comes in a variety of flavours like White Cheddar, Butter, Nacho Cheddar, Parmesan and Garlic, Ranch, Sour Cream and Onion, Salt, Caramel, Kettle Corn, and Jalapeno. Plus, Kernel Season’s also has a new all-natural, butter-flavoured popcorn spritzer. This zero- calorie topping is made from a blend of canola, sunflower, and corn oils. The only difference between this and the movie theatre topping is with Kernel Season’s Spritzer there’s zero fat and zero guilt.

In addition, Kernel Season’s is so good that over 20,000 movie theatres in the United States are offering it. And if you want to get movie night at home really “popping,” you can find Kernel Season’s products at more than 18,000 grocery stores across America, as well as at Walmart, Target, Kmart, and Blockbuster Video.

"Now here's your assignment if you choose to accept it..."

SFC: Families Matter Popcorn Poetry Contest – http://familiesmatter2us.blogspot.com
If we say salty, buttery, crunchy, and melts in your mouth, what "pops" into your mind? Popcorn, of course! In honor of this well-loved snack, Stories for Children Publishing has teamed up with Kernel Season's to announce the SFC: Families Matter Popcorn Poetry Contest. This contest and its prizes are sponsored by Kernel Season's.

Submissions will be accepted July 8-22, 2009.

Who may enter? Anyone

Contest Fees: FREE

Contest Prizes:

1st place : 1 pk of Kernel Season's All Natural Popping Corn, KS Movie Theatre Butter Topping, KS Popcorn Spritzer Butter, 3 KS Popcorn Seasoning (Flavors: White Cheddar, Kettle Corn, and Ranch), and 1pk of KS Premium Quality Microwave Popcorn.

2nd place : 1 pk of Kernel Season's All Natural Popping Corn, 1pk of KS Premium Quality Microwave Popcorn, and 2 KS Popcorn Seasoning (Flavors: Butter and Nacho Cheddar).

3rd place : 4 packages of Kernel Season's Premium Quality Microwave Popcorn.
Contest Rules:

The Rules: Post your popcorn-themed poem in the comments section of this blog post.

Length should not exceed 16 lines and should use simple beats and short lines. We prefer simple, fun, rhyming poetry. Poems should be family friendly. Winners will be selected based on quality and appeal. No mail-in or email entries will be accepted. Note: All judges, the SFC Team, and their families are ineligible to enter.

The Judges:

Gayle Jacobson-Huset, SFC's Fiction and Poetry Editor, has been "judging" the poetry entries that come into the magazine for the past 2 1/2 years. She loves popcorn and is very anxious to see what our reading audience comes up with for this "delectable delight".

Gisele LeBlanc, SFC Magazine's Assistant Poetry Editor, has been writing poetry for several years. Her poetry, fiction, and nonfiction have appeared in several publications for children. She loves going to the movies and eating popcorn and looks forward to reading everyone's poetic oaths to this savory snack.

Our mystery judge, is a writer of humorous picture books and children's poetry with a love of rhyme and word-play. Her poetry has been published in Stories for Children Magazine and Meanderings, a poetry anthology by Diversion Press (June 2009). The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators will soon publish her poem titled "Young Poet" in The Bulletin (forthcoming, 2009). Her professional affiliations include the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, JacketFlap, the Prose Shop Critique Group, and Cliff House Writers Group.

OUR MYSTERY POETRY JUDGE WILL BE REVEALED AT THE END OF THE CONTEST.

**Please also note***

1. Many editors may consider poems published online on a public blog such as this "previously published," thus resulting in authors possibly losing their First Rights.

2. ALL POEMS entered in the SFC: Families Matter Popcorn Poetry Contest remains the property of the author. Reproduction or retransmission of any poem, in whole or in part, in any manner, without the prior written consent of the author (copyright holder) is a violation of copyright law.

Special Announcement!

Special Announcement Revealed! Thank you to all who have been following along with my teasers/hints regarding my special announcement. Your interest and support is greatly appreciated. Without further ado:

In the last several years I have attended numerous in-person writers’ conference and the last two Muse Online Writers Conferences. The success stories that I've been privy to when a writer finds success in finding an agent or publisher are exhilarating. I have often wondered: How can I make this happen? Are these events pipe dreams? I'm here to tell you, you can make these special connections happen and they do not need to be pipe dreams, but reality. While coasting through the cyber-space hallways at the 2008 Muse Online Writers Conference, I received a virtual tap on my shoulder and an unexpected surprise was presented to me. VS Grenier, founder and editor of Stories for Children Magazine presented me an offer to join her team, starting January 2009 as Marketing Manager.

Your attendance at conferences is indeed crucial to be put into the right place at the right time. You never know who has been watching your writing career from afar and may present themselves to you and offer a wonderful opportunity.

Go for it...market your writing career...the break you've been striving for may just be right around the next corner!

Wishing you all a blessed 2009 filled
with happiness & success!

SFC Magazine Talks with Children’s Author Terry Pierce.

Terry Pierce chatted with Gayle Jacobson-Huset, Fiction/Poetry Editor at Stories for Children Magazine about the joys of writing for children. Gayle asked Pierce some tough questions such as: “You've written a ton of children's books. Which one is your personal favorite and why?” The two ladies had a great time covering Pierce’s writing career, not to mention Pierce’s latest book Blackberry Banquet, just released by Sylvan Dell Publishing this fall.

When asked about her next project, Pierce had this to say:
“I’m actually working on multiple projects, but the main one is a young adult adventure story about a teenage girl whose family is facing emotional difficulties. As a favor to her dad, she goes on a teen backpacking trip with an adventure organization while he is in the field teaching a college summer school class. Unfortunately, the hikers end up deep in the backcountry with their guide injured, so it is up to the girl and two other teens to hike out to safety. Let’s just say I don’t make it easy for them! I’m also working on a picture book about dinosaurs (I LOVE dinosaurs) and a non-fiction easy reader series about marine life.”

Terry Pierce is an award-winning children’s author. To read more of Pierce’s interview with Fiction/Poetry Editor Gayle Jacobson-Huset visit Stories for Children Magazine at http://storiesforchildrenmagazin.org/

There are many wonderful articles and stories in the December 2008 winter issue of Stories for Children Magazine to share with children ages 3 to 12 years old.

Stories for Children Magazine

Come Take an Adventrue in the World of Ink!

Come take an adventure in the World of Ink with Stories for Children Magazine, a monthly Ezine for children ages 3 to 12 years old.

Did you know that the love of reading is often times triggered by an adult reading good children's stories to very young children? Some expectant parents read to their babies while they're still in the womb and continue every day after they're born. Stories for Children Magazine was designed to unlock your children's imagination and take them on an exciting adventure into the World of Ink with Stanley Bookman from Storyville as their guide on the magical monthly trips.

Each monthly issue is loaded with fun stories and articles based on age-appropriate reading levels. There are also puzzles, games, children's book reviews, crafts, and poems to inspire the imagination. Children's authors or illustrators are also known to stop by, hoping to make new friends along their journey into the World of Ink.

Stories for Children Magazine is not just for adult writers. One thing that sets Stories for Children Magazine apart is that we also publish stories written and illustrated by children and teens. While submitting stories to children's magazines, editor VS Grenier was shocked to discover that few magazines allowed underage writers. She vowed to change this and has done so with Stories for Children Magazine. SFC magazine encourages readers who are our future writers and illustrators to submit to all areas of the magazine so that our readers can become a real part of the adventure that's found in the World of Ink.

There has always been an enchantment about reading a good children's story. Children take pleasure in having a story read to them anytime or anywhere - whether it be around a campfire, under a starry night, in their beds wrapped up tight in snuggly blankets, beneath a shady tree on a hot summer's day, or in front of a roaring fireplace on a cold winter's day. Children love to listen to a story being read and this can go as far as adolescence. So sit back and let the authors and illustrators at Stories for Children Magazine take you and your child along with Stanley on a magical journey into the World of Ink!
