Write What Inspires You Interviews Award-winning Author, Ellwyn Autumn

I am delighted to share my recent interview with award-winning author, Ellwyn Autumn. Be prepared to be inspired!

Ellwyn, it was a pleasure to connect with you via email and through my blog, Write What Inspires You. I’m honored to have the opportunity to interview you.

DMc: Do you hold a day job while continuing to follow your writing muse? If yes, what is your career beyond authorship? If not, how do you keep your day structured so you are productive?

EA: No, I don’t have a day job anymore. I taught for 20 years and left the profession to pursue my dream of writing full time. I’m so very fortunate and grateful for this opportunity. I don’t want to waste a minute of it. To make the most of my time and stay structured, I create a schedule. I use two different calendars and a notebook with lists of things I need to do. One calendar is strictly for my blog posts, social media shares, written interviews like this one, etc. The other is for author appearances, podcast interviews, and classroom visits.

DMc: Please share the titles, genre, publisher and synopsis of each of your published books.

EA: I have 5 published books for children, teen, and YA. I’ll list them in chronological order by release date. I’ve independently published each one under my publishing imprint Angel Kiss Publications. But I’ll state which printing company I used.

Middle Grade Fantasy
Lulu/KDP Amazon

Synopsis: When eleven-year old Patty Pringle answers a help wanted ad, she has no idea that she will be embarking on an adventure that will change her life forever. Patty and her younger brother Sean go to the mall to meet Santa, which is when Sean steals some of the letters that children have sent Santa. Determined to return the letters to Santa, Patty teams up with an elf named Agent 12-25, who takes her to the North Pole. At the North Pole, they discover that it is too late for Santa to deliver the toys that the children asked Santa to bring them. Hoping to save Christmas for these children, Patty and Agent 12-25 set off on a mission to deliver all the toys by midnight on Christmas Eve.

Children’s
Bookbaby/KDP Amazon

Synopsis: Kamyla Chung has a big problem! Every night after her parents turn off her bedroom light, a giant creepy-crawly appears on her wall. When she asks her parents for help, they buy her a nightlight, but that only makes things worse. In the end, they hire an exterminator to get rid of the creepy-crawly once and for all. Will the exterminator be able to help or will the creepy-crawly scare her away?

Children’s
KDP Amazon

Synopsis: Kamyla Chung loves school! Then one day everything changes when a classmate named Nikita begins to disrupt the classroom. Kamyla grows anxious about Nikita's hurtful behavior. It's hard to learn and have fun in school with Nikita constantly misbehaving. One day the two girls have an argument and Kamyla gets hurt. Afterwards, Kamyla learns of Nikita's own struggles. Saddened by the unfortunate news, Kamyla rises to the challenge to help her troubled classmate.

Teen/YA
KDP Amazon/Smashwords

Synopsis: Prepare for adventure aboard the Nevermore! David J. Locke is a would-be journalist with lofty aspirations. Following an incredible lead, he sails the high seas in search of Captain James T. Hook, resolved to uncover the pirate's version of what happened with Peter Pan. Adventure abounds during Locke's travels; unexpected revelations lurk around every dark corner. An old seaman befriends Locke and guides the inexperienced reporter as he learns truths about Hook, he never expected.

Children’s
Ingramspark/KDP Amazon

Synopsis: It’s teatime in the forest! Come along with Teddy and his woodland friends for a lively tea party filled with enchantment and fun. Don’t be late. They’re serving tea promptly at three!

DMc: What is your process in creating your characters? Do you create a profile outline or other technique?

EA: Yes, I do a character outline for my characters. Sometimes I’ll take qualities or quirks from people I know or have seen in passing.

DMc: What is your process in creating your storylines? Do you create an outline, free write or other technique?

EA: For my storylines, I do a little bit of everything. I’ll start writing, then outline, then write some more. Sometimes my first draft is an elaborate outline.

DMc: Do you attend writer’s workshops and conferences? If yes, what do you feel is the most important aspect of attending?

EA: To be honest, no, I haven’t attended any. I’d like to though. It’s a great way to learn new techniques and network with other authors.

DMc: Please share with our readers your current work-in-progress, your marketing strategy and how to reach you.

EA: My current work in progress is fleshing out a story called Ivee and Bodie. The title is tentative until I come up with a better one. It’s about a wizarding doctor who works in a hospital.

My marketing strategy…let’s see. I’m applying what I’ve learned in Lauren Ranalli’s course Think Beyond The Book and Kat Coroy’s Instagram course Instagram Makeover.

I’m using my brand colors and fonts to create warm and encouraging posts that invite people into my world.

I also make connections with other authors and help promote their work. Making strong connections with people is sooo important.

I have a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Mewe, Linkedin, Goodreads, Bookbub, Amazon, and Inkitt. Whew, that’s a lot.

Oh, yeah, I also have two blogs, one on my website www.ellwynautumn.com, and the other is my educational blog lemondropliterary.blogspot.com.

I also have two Facebook groups. One is called Kamyla Chung’s Bully Free Zone; the other is Lemon Drop Learning.

I almost forgot; I do Giveaways five times a year with a group of other authors.

This helps build up my email list for my newsletter. I try to be active on all these to let the virtual world know where I am. It’s a challenge, but I enjoy it. Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming. When this happens, I take a break. I have a pretty lenient boss. 😉

You can reach me through my website www.ellwynautumn.com.

Thank you so much for having me!

Ellwyn, it’s been an honor to interview and profile you at Write What Inspires You! Wishing you all the very best personally and professionally. I look forward to staying connected and I’m inviting you to send me your book(s) to read live on a future Story Time Facebook Live on Saturday mornings at 9 am EST.

Write What Inspires You Feature of the Week with Children's Author, Jennifer Gladen

Welcome to today's issue of Write What Inspires You Feature of the Week. I'm pleased to share my recent interview with children's author, Jennifer Gladen...

Jennifer, we first met through Guardian Angel Publishing as follow authors and have remained connected through cyberspace. I’m delighted to hear you continue onward with your writing and publishing journey. Well done my friend. Now on to our interview…

DMc: Do you hold a day job while continuing to follow your writing muse? If yes, what is your career beyond authorship? If not, how do you keep your day structured so you are productive?

JG: Thank you for having me Donna! Yes, I do have a day job. I’ve been teaching Technology to grades Pre-K to 8 for 6 years. They love hearing about my author adventures. Teaching, as many are probably more aware of now, is a very time consuming profession. You have the regular workday, but then there is planning, grading and communicating with families as well. Still, I manage to get writing in as much as possible. I set a time each evening to write for at least an hour. By doing this I wrote 2 more picture book manuscripts and my first novel in the past 6 months.

DMc: Please share the titles, genre, publisher and synopsis of each of your published books.

JG: I have four picture books published through Guardian Angel Publishing.

A Star in the Night, my debut picture book, is a Christmas story about David who makes his way home on Christmas Eve and sees this is no ordinary night. Accompanied by a shimmering star and some tough decisions, David encounters three experiences that will change his view of Christmas forever.

Teresa’s Shadow is a bedtime story featuring Teresa who discovers Corky, a furry visitor in her room. Together they battle their fears in order to Corky get home.

Angel Donor is a picture book about Olivia, a young child in need of a liver transplant. After waiting several months and close to losing hope, she gets the call she’s been waiting for. We follow her through the process as Olivia and the reader learn what to expect during such a time.

Caitie the Caterpillar is a spring story about the life changes Caitie goes through. t is a beautiful day for milkweed, until Catie the Caterpillar runs into Swift Sparrow. Soon, Catie and her new friend Alexander the Ant, must find a way to escape the hungry bird. As Catie faces Swift Sparrow and her own fears, she begins the process of a beautiful transformation.

I have another book in the pipeline and can’t wait until I can share more about it.

DMc: Congratulations Jen, on your next book in the pipeline. Looking forward to hearing all about it!

What is your process in creating your characters? Do you create a profile outline or other technique?

JG: For my picture books I used a questionnaire for my characters. I use it to interview them and see what makes them tick. Usually I have a basic idea of my character while my story is forming, so this helps me flesh them out more. My characters for my novel in progress have a full thorough character profile. They’re older, have more experiences and often times have a lot to say.

DMc: What is your process in creating your storylines? Do you create an outline, free write or other technique?

JG: I have a simple outline for my picture books. It helps to have direction in designing the story. Picture books have a huge story to tell, but in very few words, so organization is key. I also read a lot.

DMc: Do you attend writer’s workshops and conferences? If yes, what do you feel is the most important aspect of attending?

JG: I have participated in workshops and conferences. It is a great way to network with other authors and learn from various skill levels. I also attend webinars and I’m currently a member of the 12x12 Challenge which is a website that challenges writers to create 12 picture books in 12 months. But the real beauty of that website are the webinars, networking, advice and manuscript swaps. In all, my view is never stop educating yourself about the craft.

DMc: Please share with our readers your current work-in-progress, your marketing strategy and how to reach you.

JG: My newest picture book is in the pipeline as we speak. It Noah in Dreamland will be a whimsical story about a child’s dreaming experience. This was a ton of fun to write.

I’m putting some finishing touches on my picture book story Mia and the Magic Yeast. I’m hoping it will be ready to submit soon.

Finally, I have been working on a young adult fantasy novel about a boy, his friends and an addicting game that consumes them all.

My marketing strategy is all about making connections. As a reader myself, I love connecting with the authors, so I try to offer the same thing through my social media channels.

There are several ways to get in touch.

* First – Sign up for updates here. I like to give away freebies such as activities, recipes and coloring pages. I also do book reviews.

Jen, it’s been an honor to interview and profile you at Write What Inspires You! Wishing you all the very best personally and professionally. I look forward to reading your books at my Facebook Live Story Time on Saturday’s at 9 am EST.

Write What Inspires Your Interviews Children's Author, Karen Moore

Karen, we first met through Guardian Angel Publishing as follow authors. I understand you have several books published with HBE Publishing and you have three books under contract with Guardian Angel Publishing. Congratulations! Well done my friend. Now on to our interview…

DMc: Do you hold a day job while continuing to follow your writing muse? If yes, what is your career beyond authorship? If not, how do you keep your day structured so you are productive?

Karen: I left my job as a Title 1 Instructional Aide and Literacy Tutor almost 10 years ago to learn the craft of writing for children. Some days the only work I get done is in my head and other days I might do a lot of writing, but I try to stay connected with my characters and storylines in some way every day.

DMc: As noted above, please share the titles, genre, publisher and synopsis of each of your published books.

Karen: PEN THE TALE, OOGIE: picture book, published by: HBE Publishing - When a storytelling bear named Oogie must prepare for hibernation, Mr. Fox talks him into writing his stories down. Oogie suffers all the angst writers do including the dreaded rejection. GRRR!! Will Oogie give up or find a way to leave the gift of story?

A STORY FOR CLEOCATRA: picture book, published by: HBE Publishing - When twin cats, (one a house cat and one a barn cat), think the others life looks better than their own, they decide to switch places. They find things aren’t always as they seem.

DROTS THE DRAGOBOTOSAURUS: picture book, published by: HBE Publishing - Gavin McCracken knows to win the robotics competition and beat the shining star, Sophie Tucker, he’s going to have to design and build something spectacular. He puts his favorite things together and builds a Dragobotosaurus, but when there’s a glitch in the coding, everyone is left yelling, “Gaaviin!”

Hopefully, I’ll have a new title coming out in 2021 with Guardian Angel Publishing.

DMc: What is your process in creating your characters? Do you create a profile outline or other technique?

Karen: Sometimes I come up with a title or the name of a character first, as in Drots the Dragobotosaurus, and then I have to figure out who they are and what they want. Sometimes an idea for a story comes to me and I develop a character around the events. I usually spend a lot of time thinking about my characters and getting to know them before I write anything down on paper (other than a few notes.) Then I will usually write a rough draft on a legal pad before I go to the computer.

DMc: What is your process in creating your storylines? Do you create an outline, free write or other technique?

I live and play with my characters and storyline in my head for a long time. I like to have a basic idea where the story is going, before I write anything down. Sometimes I do create an outline, but usually I don’t. Once I have a rough draft, I do a lot of revising and editing before I take it to my critique group.

DMc: Do you attend writer’s workshops and conferences? If yes, what do you feel is the most important aspect of attending?

Karen: I joined SCBWI in 2012 and started attending regional conferences, workshops, webinars, and I’ve also been to the international conference in LA several times. I’m always learning something new. I feel it’s important for me to attend these events to connect, grow, and expand my knowledge in this everchanging business.

DMc: Please share with our readers your current work-in-progress, your marketing strategy and how to reach you.

Karen: I’m working on a couple of new picture books. One is about a dragon and one is about a goose. I’m always looking for opportunities to market and share my work. I do a lot of arts and craft fairs, boutiques, holiday events, school visits, library talks, book fairs, author events and I’m always trying to expand my social media presence.

You can find out more about my books by visiting my website: www.kcmonkeybug.com

The first six Saturday's I will read one of my children's picture books and moving forward on Saturday, May 23rd I will read aloud from a fellow author's children's book.

I will also take requests from parents and their children with a one week lead time.

"Be prepared for the adrenaline rush of escaping via the Underground Railroad, the slip of the ice beneath your skates, the harsh reality of the Royal Navy Press Gangs, the discovery of whale poachers at the beach, experience the first day of kindergarten nervousness or follow the journey of a rescued dog in finding his forever home. The roller coaster action in each escapade will transport the reader into a specific time period. One never knows where they will end up, past or present. So come on in for a front row seat into my writing world."

Tune in on Saturday, April 11th at 9 am EST to discover which book is selected for the first ever story time with me.

I look forward to connecting with one and all via Donna's Story Time Facebook Live weekly event.
